Lin Yi:Modernization, Western Paradox of Democracy and the Chinese Solution
     Release time: 2023-08-22

Western model of modernization once monopolized the right to interpret modernization and democratic development, but it also produced a series of serious contradictions and drawbacks. Therefore, the reflection on western model of modernization should touch on its essence of capitalist modernization and its service to the modernization regulation that “belongs only to the West” through its external manifestations. The solution of Chinese modernization to the problems of westernization is precisely along the principle opposite to that of capitalist modernization. The gist of Chinese modernization overcoming the shortcomings of western-style modernization is prominently manifested in two aspects: redefinition of modernization and redefinition of democracy. On the one hand, the redefinition of modernization is reflected in the consistent adherence to a positive view of modernization and the emphasis on the value of equality. On the other hand, the redefinition of democracy is reflected in the institutional answer to the question “whose democracy”, clarifying that democracy should solve problems and pursue good governance, as well as emphasizing the respect for democratic diversity and autonomy. The success of Chinese modernization will also fundamentally overcome the paradox of modernization and democracy under the westernization system, thus go beyond the limitations of westernization, so that the law of modernization and democratic development could be completely liberated from the single westernized form.
