But towns and settlements that had been liberated in March are now back under Ukrainian control. Most of the residents managed to get away with the retreating Russians. Those who stayed behind face the wrath of the fascist militias who are, reportedly, already rounding up all those suspected of working with the Russians.

Reports of fascist atrocities are now coming in from the underground Borotba resistance in Ukraine. In the town of Balakliya, which was occupied by Ukrainian troops last week, people are being taken away in an unknown direction.

The Borotba Union says: “We are talking about doctors, public utility employees, and other citizens who continued to interact with the Russian military-civilian administration.

“There are eyewitness accounts that militiamen with neo-Nazi symbols simply grabbed people at their workplaces, and no one saw these people again.

“We do not yet have the opportunity to double-check this information, but we have no reason not to trust our supporters.

Provocation

“We fear that Ukrainian neo-Nazis will organize another provocation, as they did in Bucha, and will try to blame the Russian military. Massacres are a common practice of neo-Nazis”.

In Moscow there’s growing anger at the scale of Anglo-American imperialism’s military assistance in the current offensive. Yuri Afonin, the first deputy chair of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) says “we are at war with the West for the integrity and very survival of Russia” while nationalist elements are calling for full mobilisation and total war against the Ukrainian fascists.

The Putin government has repeatedly rejected calls to mobilise but Putin’s ally, former Russian president Dmitri Medvedev, is now talking about imminent Russian escalation.

In a grim warning to the Western powers Medvedev said Western “half-wits” from “stupid think tanks” are leading their countries down the road of nuclear armageddon with their hybrid war against Russia. Endlessly funnelling weapons and support to Ukraine while pretending not to be directly involved in the conflict will not work.

Medvedev, the deputy chair of the Russian Security Council, said that if the West continues its “unrestrained pumping of the Kiev regime with the most dangerous types of weapons” Russia’s military campaign will move to the next level, where “visible boundaries and potential predictability of actions by the parties to the conflict” will be erased and the conflict will take on a life of its own, as wars always do.

And then the Western nations will not be able to sit in their clean homes, laughing at how they carefully weaken Russia by proxy. Everything will be on fire around them. Their people will harvest their grief in full. The land will be on fire and the concrete will melt.

“Yet still the narrow-minded politicians and their stupid think tanks, thoughtfully twirling a glass of wine in their hands, talk about how they can deal with us without entering into a direct war. Dull idiots with a classical education,” Medvedev said.
