On 21/2/23, thousands of young people responded to the call of the Attica Region Organization of the Communist Youth of Greece (KNE), which held a rally and march at the US Embassy in Athens on the occasion of US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s visit. They demanded that Greece’s participation in the imperialist war in Ukraine be stopped and that the country be disengaged from the dangerous plans of the US and NATO. A similar mass mobilization took place in Thessaloniki.

The Press Office of the CC of the KKE issued the following statement:

The visit of the US Secretary of State, A. Blinken, to Greece marks the even more active and multiform participation of our country in the dangerous US-NATO plans in the wider region, focusing at the moment on the imperialist war in Ukraine that is being waged between NATO and Russia. In fact, it has been made absolutely clear that Greece is willing to continue its military support, with weapons and other means, to the reactionary Zelenskiy government.

That is the content of the Greece-US Strategic Dialogue and the corresponding agreements that have turned the entire territory of Greece into a vast NATO base. It is no coincidence that the US staff visiting Greece these days are ‘inspecting’ bases and facilities that play an active role in those plans.

Blinken’s meetings with both the government and SYRIZA, which initiated the Strategic Dialogue with the US, confirm that the cornerstone of the new government’s policy will be those commitments to NATO and the US, which are leading the people into very dangerous adventures. That is why the stance of the parties towards these dangerous agreements is a criterion of vote in the upcoming elections. The need to oppose these agreements must be expressed through a stronger KKE.

The ones who benefit from the involvement in imperialist plans are the big business groups in both countries that will make lucrative deals, especially in the energy sector, as the people are already paying dearly for the supply of the very expensive US natural gas.

At the same time, the ground is being paved for NATO’s arrangements concerning Greek-Turkish relations, bringing back the well-known issue of ‘earthquake diplomacy’, which has absolutely nothing to do with genuine and real solidarity and friendship between the two peoples as opposed to the false friendship of the bourgeois classes and governments.”
