Monthly Labor Review

Established in 1915, Monthly Labor Review (MLR) is the principal journal of fact, analysis, and research from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, an agency within the U.S. Department of Labor. Each month, economists, statisticians, and experts from the Bureau join with private sector professionals and state and local government specialists to provide a wealth of research in a wide variety of fields—the labor force, the economy, employment, inflation, productivity, occupational injuries and illnesses, wages, prices, and more.

MLR articles are provided in HTML and PDF formats. With each article we provide a summary, links to related articles, author information, a list of related topics, and links to related BLS programs.

The MLR (ISSN 1937-4658) is published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. Communications on editorial matters should be addressed to the Editor-in-Chief, Monthly Labor Review, Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2 Massachusetts Avenue NE, Washington, D.C. 20212.

The Secretary of Labor has determined that the publication of this periodical is necessary in the transaction of the public business required by law of this Department.

The opinions, analysis, and conclusions put forth in articles written by non-BLS staff are solely the authors’ and do not necessarily reflect those of the Bureau of Labor Statistics or the Department of Labor.

Material published in the MLR is in the public domain and can be reproduced without further permission. Appropriate citations are requested.

Links to non-BLS Internet sites are provided for your convenience and do not constitute an endorsement.

Information from the MLR will be available to sensory impaired individuals upon request. Voice Phone: (202) 691-5200; Federal Relay Service: 1-800-877-8339.

Lawrence R. Klein Award

Each year since 1969, the Lawrence R. Klein Award has honored the best articles appearing in the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Monthly Labor Review. The award was established in honor of Lawrence R. Klein, who retired in 1968 after 22 years as editor-in-chief of the Review and established a fund to encourage articles that exhibit

        • originality of ideas or methods on analysis,

        • adhere to the principles of scientific inquiry, and

        • are well written.
